The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is leaving no stone unturned to ensure that there is no room for errors in decision-making during the Indian Premier League (IPL). Over the years, umpiring errors have sparked controversies, impacting the outcome of matches and raising questions on fairness. To further refine umpiring accuracy and reduce human errors, the BCCI has introduced a new technology to determine no-balls and wides, especially for short-pitched deliveries.
In the current IPL format, a bowler is permitted to bowl up to two bouncers per over. If a third short-pitched delivery is bowled, it is automatically called a no-ball. However, this rule has often led to on-field disputes, as umpires have had difficulty judging whether a ball was truly short-pitched and if it exceeded the legal limit. To address these concerns, the BCCI has implemented an advanced tracking system for IPL 2025.
The new system builds on technology introduced in IPL 2024, where umpires used waist-height measurements to determine full-toss no-balls. Now, the latest innovation takes it a step further. According to a report by The Times of India, this system will measure each batsman’s waist, shoulder, and head height while they stand inside the crease. This precise biometric data will be uploaded into the Hawk-Eye system, which third umpires and Hawk-Eye operators will use in real-time. This will help accurately assess deliveries such as full-toss no-balls, short-pitched bouncers, and wides based on the batsman's physical data.
By utilizing player-specific data, this innovation aims to reduce umpiring inconsistencies, ensuring a fair and transparent decision-making process throughout the tournament. This technological upgrade is expected to significantly improve match accuracy and maintain the integrity of the game.
Cricket fans worldwide are eagerly awaiting IPL 2025, which is set to commence on March 22, 2025. The season opener will be a high-voltage clash between defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) at the historic Eden Gardens, Kolkata.
