China has once again become the center of global concern as reports emerge of people being infected with a virus named Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV). With the increasing number of cases, the Indian government has issued alerts and sought detailed information from Chinese authorities. The fear looms that this virus might turn out to be as deadly as the coronavirus, despite China's reassurances that the situation is under control.
So, what exactly is this virus, and how does it spread? Human Metapneumovirus, or HMPV, is a respiratory virus that can affect people of all ages. However, it poses a higher risk to the elderly and young children. If you come into contact with an infected person, you can also get infected. Common symptoms include a runny nose, sore throat, headache, fatigue, cough, fever, or chills.
HMPV typically spreads through coughing and sneezing. It can also spread through direct contact, such as touching or shaking hands with an infected person. Symptoms usually appear within five days of exposure. Experts indicate that while this virus is present year-round, it becomes more active in colder months, rapidly infecting people.
To protect yourself, wearing a mask, especially outdoors, is crucial. Avoid shaking hands with infected individuals, and wash your hands thoroughly after returning home. Refrain from self-medicating without a doctor's advice and avoid crowded places where the virus can spread quickly. Unfortunately, there is currently no vaccine for HMPV.
Recent social media videos from China showing overcrowded hospitals with flu-like patients have sparked global concern. Many fear this virus could present a new challenge, much like the COVID-19 pandemic that originated from a market in Wuhan, China, five years ago.
