She believed there should be a day dedicated to honoring mothers for their selfless love, sacrifices, and devotion.

Anna's mother passed away in May, so she began celebrating her mother's death anniversary as Mother's Day. After her mother's death, Anna devoted her entire life to serving others, much like a mother would. During World War I, Anna served wounded American soldiers with a motherly compassion. To honor her service and dedication, former U.S. President Woodrow Wilson passed a law recognizing Anna's efforts and officially declared Mother's Day as a day of celebration. A law was passed in the U.S. Congress to celebrate this day on the second Sunday of May each year. Since then, Mother's Day has been celebrated annually on the second Sunday of May.

Initially, Mother's Day was only celebrated in America, but it has now spread to many other countries, including Europe, India, and various other nations.
