Indian Railway Ticket Booking Rules: New Changes from November 1, 2024

With the onset of November, the Indian Railway has updated its ticket booking rules to enhance passenger convenience. Effective November 1, 2024, travelers will now be able to book their train tickets with an advance booking window reduced from 120 days to just 60 days. This modification applies to both online bookings via IRCTC and in-person purchases at railway ticket counters.

The rationale behind this change is to facilitate easier access to confirmed tickets for passengers, while simultaneously reducing the number of ticket cancellations. Previously, the extended advance booking period led to an increased waiting list and a higher rate of cancellations, as passengers often found themselves unable to travel as planned over such a long period. Under the new rules, it is anticipated that more travelers will engage in timely bookings, with a noted preference for purchasing tickets around 45 days prior to travel.

It is important to note that the newly implemented rule will not affect tickets that have already been booked or ongoing travel plans. Moreover, the cancellation policy remains unchanged, ensuring that travelers can adjust their plans as needed.
